What is the narrator's relationship with Pieter in the novel, Too Late the Phalarope?

Sophie, the narrator, is Pieter's aunt, who, because of her facial disfigurement, lives with her brother and his family although she remains a bit of an outsider. Having never married, she regards Pieter as the son she never had, and dotes on him shamelessly.
