How does the author use symbolism in the novel, Tony and Susan?

One example of symbolism can be found in the empty house, which is symbolic of everything that Tony has lost. Following the rape and murder of his wife and daughter, Tony must return home. The house is quiet and lonely without them. It reminds him constantly of what he has lost.
