William Perkin is the scientist who accidentally created uses for coal tar in 1856. He was able to dye fabrics with them, creating rich hues that other people would pay a lot of money for. It is his invention all those years ago, and the commercial demand for dyed fabric, that causes the problems in Toms River a century later.
