The primary setting of “To an Athlete Dying Young” is presumably Shropshire – Housman’s poem is part of his poetry collection, A Shrophsire Lad, in which all of the individual poems in the collection are connected to each other by Housman’s semi-fictionalized depiction of Shropshire. In “To an Athlete Dying Young” and in the other poems part of A Shropshire Lad, Shropshire is a representation of the rural, provincial community, where everyone knows everyone else. As such, the setting of the never-changing Shropshire makes possible the existence of the united choral voice that speaks in “To an Athlete Dying Young” and an immortalizing communal form of remembrance.
