Susan and Matthew Rawlings's marriage is described as that of a couple, who are "well matched". They were in their late twenties when they married and had known each other a long time. Before they had children, Susan was employed in an advertising firm, and Matthew was employed as a sub-editor for a London newspaper. They bought a house in Richmond and went on to have four children. They have a happy marriage, but their marriage lacks life..... excitement. The couple is complacent, but they both know that something isn't quite right. The fact that they love each other, however, leads them to believe that all is well..... their marriage will be a success.
