One symbol in the story can be found in Susan's visions, in which, she sees her demon prodding at a sickly looking snake with a stick. The snake can be seen as a symbol of Susan herself—unhealthy and oppressed. The demon, on the other hand, can be seen as a reality check, a wake-up call to shake her out of her stagnation.

An important motif in the story is madness.
