Scholars broadly agree that Lovelace, who never married, did not base Lucasta on a real woman. Instead, she is the representation of the feminine ideal. She is “chaste” and “quiet,” providing a loving solace for the man who loves her between battles (3). She thus depicts the ideal female virtues that correspond to the speaker’s masculine virtues.
