Why did Miss Maudie complain that Maycomb looked like a Roman carnival on the day the trial began?

Ms. Maudie says that it looks like a Roman Carnival because the trial was such a huge sensation in the little town of Maycomb people were making a spectacle out of it. There were all sorts of festivities, like a town fair, taking place on the day of the trial.
