What is the author's tone in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee?

The tone of To Kill a Mockingbird shifts from scene to scene. Much of the novel is light-hearted and even comical, but Tom Robinson's trial, as well as Mr. Ewell's actions against the Finch family are written with a far more serious and somber tone.
