Desai uses two different narrators and two different points of view in her novel. The majority of the novel is told by Simi from the first-person point of view in the past tense. Simi’s first-person narration is vital to the novel because it allows the reader to experience what it is like to be in Simi’s head. She is always thinking and always talking, but not always thinking before she talks.

There are also three sections of the novel, the Prologue, the Epilogue, and Chapter 31, that are narrated in the second-person point of view by Jack. These sections of the novel are narrated by Jack because they do not involve Simi.
