When Lara Jean speaks to Mr. Clarke at his home, she discovers that he is angry and bitter with his daughter for abandoning him to the extent that she isn't even helping him to move into the nursing home. The Clarke family squabble shows Lara Jean what it would really mean to abandon and mistreat your family, highlighting the fact that Lara Jean’s own gradually developing independence from her family is healthy and not an abandonment of them.
