Why did Julian turn his back on the priesthood in the play, Tiny Alice?

Julian turned his back on the priesthood after experiencing a crisis of faith. He came to believe that people were worshipping the image of God they created, not God himself; they were worshipping the symbol of God. When this happened, he checked himself into a mental asylum for six years.
