Why does Howard leave his wife in the novel, Tinkers?

Howard suffers from seizures and during a consultation with the doctor, she is given a pamphlet for the state hospital, which takes in mental patients. When Kathleen leaves the pamphlet on the dresser, Howard sees it and immediately realizes that his wife plans to commit him, so he flees.
