Why does Sir Oliver imprison Professor Johnston in the novel, Timeline?

Sir Oliver is desperate to find a way to save his lands which are soon to be under attack by Arnaut. For this reason, he makes a prisoner of Professor Johnston, who helps Oliver by making gunpowder and automatic fire. These things do little to help Oliver, however, as Arnaut finds the secret passageway into La Roque.
