Why are Kate's old family photos so important to her in the novel, Timebound?

After the timeline changes the only thing that Kate has are a few pictures of her family that were protected because of the proximity to her CHRONOS medallion. These are the last remnants of Kate’s family and her connection to the old timeline, reminding her exactly what she’s fighting for.
