Why does Herta leave her husband, Odilo, in the novel, Time’s Arrow?

Herta leaves her husband after finding out about his sinister line of "work" and questioning its legality. Her goodbye takes place at the end of her visit with him at Auschwitz, where thousands of Jews are being "processed."
