What metaphors are used in Thunderstruck by Erik Larson?

Larson makes wide use of simile and metaphor. Morse code, for example, is compared to "invisible confetti"; the street outside the Royal Institution is like "a great black seam of coal"; and the nearness of Holloway Gaol "stole the warmth from a sunny day".
