For what purpose do the skinwalkers burn datura flowers in the novel, Thunderhead?

The skinwalkers burn datura flowers so that they can inhale the smoke created. The smoke contains a narcotic that causes the skinwalkers to become intoxicated almost as if they had ingested PCP.
