The marriage blanket Swan Necklace has begun making for Sound of Running Feet is mentioned frequently throughout the book, most often when Sound of Running Feet feels regret at their stalled wedding and wishes for a better future. The marriage blanket symbolizes the disruption of ordinary life which befalls the Ne-mee-poo once the Blue Coats enter their lives, and the sad reality of ruined futures and lost simple pleasures. The fact that Swan Necklace has not had time to complete the painting of the blanket demonstrates how his role as a warrior has usurped his role as a painter and even as a lover, leaving little time for thoughts of marriage while Sound of Running Feet can think of little else, given her boredom and her inability to fight.
