How does the author use symbolism in the novel, Through the Arc of the Rainforest?

Throughout the novel, the author uses feathers to symbolize the ways in which naturally occurring products of the earth are treated as instruments for human use. Ultimately, the human attempt to monetize and commercialize nature backfires, as the feathers carry disease.
