Maggie and her parents had a strained relationship because they did not offer her the support she needed throughout high school, and she was forced to keep many secrets to herself. For example, she struggled to relate to her family after she lost her virginity to a much older man on a family trip to Hawaii. She felt that her relationship with her father had been irrevocably damaged.
