The Independence, the ship Cibi boards to Israel is a symbol for the eldest sister’s freedom. In the same way that the ship sails unfettered to the promise land, Cibi pursues a new life for herself outside of Nazi persecution. The Independence also solidifies that Cibi’s adherence to upholding the promise, to stay with her sisters, was always a decision she made freely. When she followed Livi to Auschwitz, to protect her, she found freedom in deciding to honor her sisterhood instead of running from the antisemitic persecution.
