The refugee woman goes into labor while out on the open sea with the convict, who tries to hurry to shore but is too late. The baby is born on the boat with the entire process completely grossing out the convict. When the baby is born, there is no knife to cut the umbilical cord, so the convict must use a jagged tin can. He imagines that the baby is like a snake or any other animal to try to clear his head after the birth.
