What happens in the story when the young boy turns sixteen?

When the young boy turns sixteen, his name is finally revealed to the reader as "Ike". Also, when Ike is sixteen, the bear is finally killed. This happens after many years of long-suffering in the hunt and just when the hunters are about to give up their quest to fell Old Ben.
