How does the story of "The Old Man" open?

At the opening of "The Old Man", two convicts - one very tall and one very fat - sit around a prison plantation whiling away their days, watching the rain. It has been raining for a few days, so there isn't much work for the convicts to do on the plantation. The pair sit and contemplate their crimes and wonder whether or not they deserve to be stuck here in this condition.
