When Ike's father dies, he is sent to live with his cousin, McCaslin, who raises him. When he is twenty-one, Ike learns that his father has left him a large chunk of land to share with his cousin. Ike decides that he does not want to own the land because he believes it is perpetuating the cycle of man thinking he can own the earth. To Ike, this mentality is ridiculous as only God can own the land.
