How does Ike live his life after he decides not to accept his inherited land?

When Ike decides not to accept the land he has inherited, he continues to spend all his time in the woods, hunting and fishing, but professionally becomes a carpenter. He marries a women from town but the two have a very cold relationship. When Ike's wife urges him to move back to plantation, he lets her know very clearly that he belongs in the woods.
