How do the hunters learn that Old Ben is not an indestructible force of nature?

The hunters learn that Old Ben is not totally indestructible the second time Lion is sent out in hunt of the bear. He manages to hold the bear at bay while the posse of hunters ride up behind him, shooting the massive bear in the back. A few of the shots hit Old Ben and even draw blood, but the animal manages to escape the hunt anyway.
