How did Ash attempt to outshine Ike as children, and what was the result of his attempt?

After Ash watched Ike kill his first deer, he was incredibly jealous and vowed not to be outshone by a much younger child. That night, he crept out into the woods with his gun, determined to kill an animal, any animal. While he was out there alone, he came face-to-face with a giant bear but was too afraid to shoot. He left the woods feeling ashamed and has never forgiven himself.
