The wolf stands as a symbol for the cunning and destructive nature of the white men. Whenever wolves are mentioned, it is almost always in reference to the white men and/or fighting. The first mention of wolves comes from Sergeant McCaan who says, "It's time to act like wolves" (18). He wants them to act like tough warriors who are not afraid of anything. He wants them to grow a backbone and go proudly to their death.
