The author uses first person narration throughout the novel. There are two main character, Niska and Xavier, who's first person narrations dominate the novel. Xavier's narration is dominant throughout the novel with Niska narrating a few chapters here and there. By having Xavier dominate the narration, the author is able to make sure the reader knows that he is the main character and that the story is about him. Through Xavier's first person narration the reader is able to follow the chronology of the war and understand how certain circumstances made him act the way he does. Readers are able to fully understand Xavier's motives and they are given an inside look into what a man goes through when fighting a war.
