In the beginning of the novel, Luc talks about how he used to hunt animals for their bushmeat to stay alive. Later, Prof hints to Luc about feeling guilty for eating chickens, but Luc doesn't care because they are delicious. As Luc goes deeper into the jungle and becomes more and more involved with various animals, he begins to care more about the animals. In the end, when he sees that the hunters have killed an animal for its bushmeat, he mourns for the loss.
