Luc uses the terms "inside" and "outside" in the beginning of the novel to describe the differences between in the jungle and out of the jungle. Inside is the jungle itself, and Outside is the area on the fringes. Humans inhabit the Outside, animals inhabit the Inside. This is significant because more fully than any other character, Luc is able to inhabit both worlds.
