The narrative tone stays the same regardless of which character’s story is presently being told. The narrator maintains a distanced perspective; however, the characters’ feelings are revealed. The dialogue of the different characters changes based upon their station in life. The Black people speak with a dialect, and sometimes they use Gullah words and phrases. They discuss Gullah practices. Gullah is an ethnic group of Black people who live in parts of America and on the islands, and as such, people of their station would be aware of this culture.
