What happened at Fort Hudson in the novel, Thread Collectors?

A long and brutal battle occurred at Fort Hudson. The Black men were given weapons, but the white people in charge did not care about their lives as much as the white men, so very little surveillance was done. Five hundred Black men lost their lives, and it was forty-seven days before the dead could be buried.
