What does Lucifer represent in the novel, This Tender Land?

Lucifer, a poisonous snake, represents danger. After Lucifer bites Albert, Odie and his companions are convinced he will die, and Odie blames himself for his brother's tenuous condition. Albert, however, survives suggesting that though the hardships of life might threaten the individual's sense of peace, he is capable of overcoming them.
