How does the author use symbolism in the novel, This Tender Land?

One example of symbolism can be found in the way Odie watches the driftwood float in circles in the river. While watching the driftwood spin with direction, Odie feels uprooted and lost, unsure how he might fulfill the desires of his heart.... the driftwood is a symbol of loneliness.
