What does Daniel realize when he visits his children in Fresno in the novel, This Must Be the Place?

It is while visiting Frensno that Daniel and his children realize their mother (his ex-wife) has been intercepting all of his correspondence to them to keep him out of their lives. After this visit, Daniel and his children reconnect and grow steadily closer through the end of the novel.
