The poem is almost completely centered on its first-person speaker, but the addressee to whom the speaker delivers the poem to is also an important background character. Even less is known about the addressee than the speaker – the reader can infer that the two live together or share resources as both figures have access to “the icebox,” and by proxy, “the plums” (2-4). The poem suggests closeness between the addressee and the speaker, the reader assuming the addressee will “forgive” the speaker for eating the plums (9).
