What causes Pedro to commit murder in the short-story, Thirteen Ways of Looking?

Peter and his son, Elliot, regularly eat lunch at the restaurant where Pedro works. Pedro is angry with Elliot because he had an affair with his daughter and later fired her. When Peter is walking home, he is attacked (it is possible that Pedro thought that Peter was Elliot) and killed.
