DeStasio’s threats symbolize the weakness and insecurity that are inherent to misogyny. DeStasio lives a generally lonely, painful, and bitter life. He begins threatening Cassie because he worries that her presence will disrupt the last good thing in his life: the fire station. Eventually, he is able to see the shameful error of his ways.
