Okonkwo lives in a patriarchal world where hyper-masculinity is his only sense of identity. The speaker in the Ted Talk related his sense of shame when asked by a mental doctor if he would like councelling. Shame is also what Okonkwo felt when confronted with emotion or feelings like empathy, even towards his own son.
