The author uses stars as a symbol of authenticity for Jill. While much of her life is made up with fake friends, silly competitions, and blind ambition--she never loses sight of her true goal, to become an astrophysicist, and she always looks up at the sky to ground herself during the most surreal moments of her high school life.
