Executive Order 9066 authorized the Secretary of War to designate certain areas of the United States as "military zones," and once this was done, it could easily be argued that Japanese Americans living in those zones were a potential threat to national security. Thus this order laid the groundwork for the opening of the internment camps. It is estimated that around 112,000 people of Japanese descent were forced from their homes and into the camps as the result of this order and the subsequent military zoning.
