The 422nd Regiment was a unit consisting entirely of Japanese American soldiers who joined the Army after the ban on Japanese enlistees was lifted in 1943. The regiment conducted the heroic rescue of a Texas battalion in Eastern France, suffering 800 casualties in the process, with 42 additional men captured and sent to POW camps. In 1946, the regiment was issued the Distinguished Service Cross by President Truman, and in 2000, they were issued the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Clinton. Senator Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii was a member of the 422nd, and lost his right arm while serving.
