They Called Us Enemy is a graphic memoir narrated in the first person by actor and activist George Takei, who relates his experiences living in Japanese internment camps as a child. Thus much of the narrative consists of the reconstruction of childhood memories, which have been elaborated on and contextualized by information George later learned as an adult. Because of this perspective, and the graphic medium, the memoir is easily accessible to a Young Adult audience.
