Rufus’ photos symbolize how he sees his life. Once his family died, he says that his “life lost color” which explains why he posts all his photos to Instagram in black and white (158). As he admits to Mateo near the end of the novel, he has been “so damn lost these past few months” unable to cope with the guilt of losing his family (309). However, after finding Mateo he begins to post his life in color. Although this starts out as a way for Plutos to remember him, it soon becomes representative of Rufus’ life, as he begins to live and be happy with Mateo. Through his photographs, Rufus documents the way that he sees his life, moving from dark and hopeless to colorful and joyful.
