Technology proves to be one of the most fundamental themes in the novel, challenging readers to grapple with questions regarding its benefit in society. The theme is first introduced by Death-Cast. Living in a world in which this technology exists, readers are forced to question whether knowing their death is a good thing. Early on in the novel, Mateo asks, “having the chance to say goodbye before you die is an incredible opportunity, but isn’t that time better spent actually living?” (7). They Both Die at the End is a challenge in analyzing the consequences of technology and ultimately determining whether it is a good or bad advancement for society.
