The author uses the White Flowers to symbolize modernity and innovation. Unlike the Scarlet Gang, the White Flowers invest in the future. This is shown through their science lab where Lourens works. Not only are they researching new technology, they are using it to their advantage. Juliette even remarks that the Scarlet Gang would never invest in something so advanced. The White Flowers also choose to live among their people instead of on the outskirts of the city, building connections that will allow them to move forward rather than being dragged down by a lack of understanding.
