Throughout the entirety of the essay collection, Patchett's tone is honest and open, vulnerable and reflective. Although Patchett is interrogating and exploring complex literary, metaphysical, and spiritual concepts throughout, she consistently embraces humor and beauty, wit and irony. Therefore, she marries a range of tonal registers throughout her collection. In this way, the reader is able to see Patchett's humanity and realness as she searches for answers to life's most profound questions.
